How to configure SIM card internet access on an EG series Gateway

How to configure SIM card internet access on an EG series Gateway

📖 Overview

This guide provides a comprehensive, step-by-step procedure for connecting a Robustel EG Series Edge Gateway to the internet using a SIM card via RobustOS Pro.

Establishing a cellular connection is a critical first step for edge deployments. RobustOS Pro is designed to be "plug-and-play," but manual configuration is sometimes required for specific network carriers or custom APN settings.

🛠 What You'll Need

  • Hardware:
    • Robustel EG Series Gateway (e.g., EG5100, EG5120).
    • Active SIM card.
  • Software/Firmware:
    • RobustOS Pro (v2.0.0 or higher).

📝 Note: By default, Robustel gateways are factory-configured to automatically detect and dial-up cellular connections. Manual link creation is only required if the default configuration has been deleted or modified.

🚀 Step-by-Step Configuration Guide

1️⃣ Step 1: Physical Installation

  1. Insert the SIM card into Slot 1.

  1. Attach cellular antennas to the Main and Aux ports.

  1. Power on the device and log in to the web GUI (Default: 192.168.0.1).
  1. Navigate to Network > WAN > Link.
  2. Check the list for an existing entry with the type Modem (4G/5G).

  1. Add Link (Optional): If no Modem link exists, click the + icon:
  • Name: WWAN
  • Type: Modem (4G/5G)
  • Click Submit.
  • Click the Save & Apply icon in the top right corner of the page.

3️⃣ Step 3: Advanced Cellular & APN Settings(Optional)

If your SIM provider requires a private APN, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to Network > Cellular.
  2. In the Advanced Cellular Settings section, click the Edit (pencil) icon for SIM1.
  3. Set Automatic APN Selection to Off.
  4. Enter the APN name, Username, and Password provided by your carrier.
  5. Click Submit
  6. Click the Save & Apply icon in the top right corner of the page.

⚠️ Warning: If "Automatic APN Selection" is Off and the APN field is blank or incorrect, the modem will fail to register on the network.

Verification & Testing

1. Check cellular network status

  1. Navigate to Network > WAN.
  2. Click the Status tab.
  3. Locate the Link Status section.
  4. Check the WWAN interface status.

Success: The status will show Connected once the dial-up process is complete.

2. Connectivity Test

Navigate to System -> Tools. In the Ping section, enter 8.8.8.8 in the IP Address field and click Start.

Success: The gateway successfully communicates with the internet if the output shows that reply packets are received from the destination IP.

Troubleshooting / FAQ

  • Q: The status shows "Disconnected" even with a SIM inserted.
    • A: Ensure the antennas are tightened and the SIM is active.
    • A: Check Interface > Cellular > Status to see if the modem has a signal (RSSI).
  • Q: Does it matter which SIM slot I use?
    • A: This guide assumes SIM 1. If using SIM 2, ensure the configuration in Step 3 is applied to the SIM 2 tab.
