Apply a Zero Touch Template to Devices

Apply a Zero Touch Template to Devices

Zero Touch lets you deploy a prepared firmware, app or configuration template to one or more devices remotely. This helps you apply a consistent setup across devices while supplying individual configuration values where needed.

After creating a template, use this procedure to select the devices, provide any per-device settings and choose when the update should run. Check the update history to confirm the result.

Before you begin

  • Connect your devices to RCMS Cloud and create a template for their device series. See Create a Zero Touch Template in RCMS Cloud.
  • Check the template contents and target devices before applying it. Use RCMS App V5.3.0 or later for RobustOS devices, or V2.3.0 or later for RobustOS PRO devices.

Select a template and devices

  1. In RobustLink, select Zero Touch, then open Apply Template.
  2. Choose the Device Series and Template Name, then select Apply to Devices.
  3. Select the devices to update. Check the Selected Device(s) list, then select Next.

Example: search for and select an R1511 device.

The left list shows available devices and their online status, group and license. The right list shows the selected devices; use the cross to remove a device from the selection.

Set per-device configuration

If the template includes an XML configuration and you need different values for individual devices, download the variable parameters template for the selected devices. Enter each device's values against its serial number. Parameters to be changed must exist in the XML configuration. Upload the completed spreadsheet using Add. If no individual parameters are needed, select Skip.

For eSIM configuration, the device must have an eSIM chip or pluggable eSIM card. Check the supported versions using the link in the dialog and ensure the device firmware and RCMS App are up to date.

Choose when to update

  1. Select Update Immediately or Scheduled Update; for a scheduled update, set the required time.
  2. Review the target devices, template and timing, then select Apply.

Important: Applying a template can change device configuration, firmware or apps. An offline device receives the template when it next connects to RCMS. Review the changes and timing before applying. RCMS also warns that firmware V5.6.0 or later cannot be downgraded to a version before V5.3.5.

Check the result

Open Update History to check the status and details for each device. A pending application can be cancelled before the device starts updating. For the steps, see Check Zero Touch Update History and Cancel a Pending Application. After a successful update, check that the device reconnects and operates as expected.
