How to Configure Ethernet Internet Access on EG Series Gateways

How to Configure Ethernet Internet Access on EG Series Gateways

📖 Overview

This guide provides a comprehensive, step-by-step procedure for configuring an Ethernet WAN connection on Robustel EG Series Edge Gateways running RobustOS Pro.

By default, Ethernet ports are assigned to the local bridge (br_lan). To use an Ethernet port as a WAN interface for internet access, it must be detached from the bridge and then configured as a dedicated WAN link.

🛠 What You'll Need

  • Hardware List:
    • Robustel EG Series Edge Gateway (e.g., EG5100, EG5120, EG5200).
  • Software/Firmware:
    • Robustel device running RobustOS Pro (v2.3.0 or later).
  • Other:
    • Log in to the Gateway's web interface. The default IP address is typically http://192.168.0.1.
    • Network parameters if using a static IP (IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, DNS).

📝 Note: This guide uses eth0 as the example port. You may use other ports by selecting the corresponding interface name during configuration.

🚀 Step-by-Step Configuration Guide

1️⃣ Step 1: Unbind Ethernet Port from Bridge

The port must be removed from the LAN bridge before it can be used for WAN.

  1. Navigate to Interface -> Bridge.
  2. Under the Settings tab, find the br_lan interface and click the Edit icon.
  3. In the pop-up window, locate the Sub Interface section.
  4. Uncheck the box for eth0.
  5. Click Submit, then click the Save & Apply icon at the top right.

⚠️ Warning: Ensure you are not currently accessing the WebUI via the port you are unbinding (e.g., eth0), as this will cause you to lose your connection to the device.

Create the logical WAN connection using the freed physical port.

  1. Navigate to Network -> WAN.
  2. In the Link tab, under the Settings section, click the + (Add) button.
  3. In the configuration window, enter the following:
  • Name: Enter a name (e.g., WAN_Ethernet).
  • Type: Select Ethernet.
  • Interface: Select the unbinded port (e.g., eth0).
  1. Scroll to IPv4 Settings(Optional):
  • IPv4 Connection Type: Keep as DHCP for automatic assignment.
  • Manual: If required, change to manual and enter your static IP details.
  1. Click Submit, then click the Save & Apply icon at the top right.

Verification & Testing

Navigate to Network -> WAN and click the Status tab.

Success: The Status for the eth0 interface should display as connected, indicating the physical and logical link is up and an IP address has been assigned.

2. Connectivity Test

Navigate to System -> Tools. In the Ping section, enter 8.8.8.8 in the IP Address field and click Start.

Success: The gateway successfully communicates with the internet if the output shows that reply packets are received from the destination IP.

Troubleshooting / FAQ

  • Q: The WAN status remains "Disconnected".
    • A: Check the physical cable connection and ensure the upstream device is active.
    • A: Verify that the port was successfully removed from the Bridge settings in Step 1.
    • A: This indicates a DNS issue. If using a manual IP, ensure the Primary DNS is correctly configured to a valid server like 8.8.8.8.
  • Q: The Ping test shows no packets are being received.
    • A: Check for cable damage, firewall rules on the upstream device, or incorrect IP settings in Step 2.
