Overview
This guide provides instructions for resetting a Robustel EG series gateway (e.g., EG5120, EG5200) running RobustOS Pro to its factory default state. A factory reset is a powerful troubleshooting step used when a device is inaccessible (e.g., a forgotten IP address or credentials, improper configuration causing inaccessibility, or instability from a third-party application) or when you need to erase all custom configurations and user-installed applications to return the device to its original, out-of-the-box state.
Warning: This process will permanently delete all user-installed applications, files, and configurations saved after the device left the factory. This action is irreversible.
Method | Best For... | Requirements |
Method 1: Hardware 'RST' Button | The device is running, but you are locked out (e.g., forgotten IP/password, misconfigured firewall). | Physical access & a paperclip |
Method 2: Web UI | You have full admin access and want to erase all configurations and apps. | Admin login credentials & network access |
Method 3: USB Factory Image | Critical Failure. The device cannot boot properly, is stuck in a reboot loop, or is "bricked." | Physical access, USB drive, & factory image file |
What You'll Need
- 1 x Robustel EG Series Gateway (e.g., EG5120, EG5200)
- 1 x Paperclip or SIM Ejector Tool (for Method 1)
- 1 x PC with an Ethernet Port and cable (for Method 2 & Verification)
- 1 x USB Flash Drive (for Method 3)
- RobustOS Pro (This guide is based on v2.4.0)
- The correct factory image file for your specific gateway model (e.g.,
egxxxx-uuu-udisk-upgrade-xxx.tgz) (for Method 3)
- Method 1 is the best option if you cannot log in to the gateway's web interface, but the device still boots up.
- Method 2 requires you to have administrative access to the Web UI.
- Method 3 is for critical failures when the device will not boot properly.
Step-by-Step Configuration Guide
Select the method that best fits your situation.
This is the most common method if you are locked out of the gateway's Web UI but the device is otherwise running. This process requires performing a "restore default" operation twice in quick succession.
- Ensure the gateway is powered on and has finished its boot-up sequence (the RUN LED should be blinking normally).
- Locate the 'RST' (Reset) pinhole on the device's chassis.
- Insert your paperclip or pin into the 'RST' hole and press and hold the internal button.
- Continue holding for approximately 5 to 10 seconds.
- Release the button as soon as you see the RUN LED begin to flash rapidly. This completes the first operation.
- IMPORTANT: You must now repeat the process. Within one minute of releasing the button, press and hold the 'RST' button again.
- Hold for another 5 to 10 seconds, and again, release it when the RUN LED flashes rapidly.
- After the second release, the gateway's LEDs will flash, and the device will automatically reboot. It is now restoring to its factory defaults. This process may take a few minutes to complete.
Method 2: Using the Web UI (Requires Admin Access)
Use this method if you can still log in to the gateway's web interface.
- Navigate to the System > Backup & Restore menu.
- Note: In older firmware versions (like 2.3.1 and earlier), this path may be System > Profile.
- Click on the Backup tab.
- On this page, locate the Backup Management section.
- Click the button labeled "Restore To Factory Default".
- A confirmation pop-up window will appear warning you that the action will clear all data. Click OK.
- A second pop-up will appear informing you that the device needs to reboot to apply the changes. Click OK to proceed.
- The gateway will now automatically reboot and restore its factory defaults.

Method 3: Using a USB Factory Image (For Boot Failures)
Use this method when the gateway cannot start correctly, for instance, if it is stuck in a constant reboot loop. This process re-flashes the entire operating system from an external USB drive.
- Obtain the correct factory image file for your gateway from your Robustel support contact. The filename will be similar to
egxxxx-uuu-udisk-upgrade-xxx.tgz. - On your computer, extract the contents of this
.tgz file. - This will create a folder (e.g.,
egxxxx-uuu-udisk-upgrade). - Format your USB flash drive. It must be FAT32.
- Copy this extracted folder to the root directory of the USB flash drive.
- Ensure the gateway is completely powered off.
- Insert the USB flash drive into the gateway's USB port.
- Power on the gateway.
- The gateway will detect the USB drive and begin the flashing process. Do not interrupt the power.
- Wait and observe the device's LEDs. The process is successful when you see all the LEDs light up sequentially and cycle (a "running light" or "marquee" pattern).
- Once you see this LED pattern, the re-flash is complete. You can now safely remove the USB flash drive.
- The gateway will restart automatically with its factory defaults.
Verification & Testing
Once the gateway has finished rebooting (which may take several minutes), you can verify the factory reset was successful:
- Check Web Access: You should now be able to access the gateway at its default LAN IP address (typically
http://192.168.0.1). You will need to use the default credentials:
- Username:
admin - Password: (Printed on the product's label)
- Check Applications: If you had previously installed any custom applications from the App Center, navigate to that page and verify they are no longer listed.
Troubleshooting / FAQ
- Q: I used the reset (RST) button once, but my old settings are still there. What went wrong?
- A: You likely performed a "Restore to Default Configuration" (user's saved default) instead of a "Restore to Factory Default." Pressing the button once restores the user's saved configuration. To perform a true factory reset, you must perform the operation twice within one minute, as described in Method 1.
- Q: I can't access the Web UI, and the hardware reset button doesn't seem to be working.
- A: Ensure the device is fully powered on and has finished booting (RUN LED is stable) before you start the reset procedure. Make sure you are holding the button long enough (5-10 seconds) to see the RUN LED flash rapidly and that you are repeating the action quickly enough (within one minute). If this still fails, your device's OS may be corrupted, and you should try Method 3.
- Q: What are the default login details after a factory reset?
- A: The default username is
admin. The default password is printed on the product label of your gateway. The default LAN IP address is typically 192.168.0.1.
